Hiking
I remember my first fitness watch. It was a revelation. I love to hike, and whilst part of that experience was the uncertainty around what’s next, suddenly knowing how far I’d walked enabled me to relax more. An hour ahead of time? Pack down, have a snooze in the sun and chill for a bit. As someone who loves a mid hike snooze, this was gold.
I’ve had a few different watches since, and must admit that it now sits on my wrist with a dictatorial approach to bossing me around in my everyday life. Messages, phone calls and meetings - it tells me about all the key stuff I need to do. But it goes beyond that. Not moved enough today? The Garmin will let me know - Move! it commands me. Sat for too long? Riiiise!!! I’ve tried many things, but nothing appeases the Garmin. Nothing.
Yet on my wrist it sits, reminding me that I am prepared for anything. I can do it all. As I get up from my desk to make another coffee, I am safe in the knowledge that should I suddenly find myself lost in the remote wilderness my Garmin would find my way home. But first, an oatmilk latte.
But after that, I too am a walking GPS.
